Nate Walther
Mile One Running Shop's
April 2015 Athlete of the Month
Nate recently moved to Minot to serve as Pastor at the Grace Lutheran Church. Shortly after arriving he searched for a local running group and quickly became a regular member of our "running community". While growing up in Watertown, WI and attending Martin Luther College in MN he was an accomplished athlete on his prep and collegiate cross country teams. His personal bests are:
5K 17:35
8K 28:26
His favorite running memory was winning the College Conference Championships in 2008 after a season of injuries and when most people wrote their team off. He cherishes the experience of seeing his close-knit team come together and push each other towards a common goal.
The person with the greatest influence on his athletic career has been his college coach Mark Paustian. When asked what his competition goals are for post-collegiate running his response is "I Have None". He is simply enjoying running for the sake of running and appreciates the large group of runners in Minot who have befriended him with their encouragement and who help push his pace now and then.
His greatest sports thrill was meeting his wife while they were both on the cross country team in college. "She developed the habit of stealing my hat until I noticed her, and we credit running with providing the opportunity to meet and realize we were meant to be together."

Jaden Wahlund
Mile One Running Shop's
Athlete of the Month- October 2014
In meeting Jaden you would never know that he is one of the most competitive cross country runners in North Dakota. His quiet demeanor and humble attitude conceal the commitment and drive of a remarkable athlete.
A senior at Minot High, Jaden set a new cross country record for the school this year by completing the 5,000 meter distance in 16:38. His MHS record time is also the 9th fastest time ever ran by a class A boy in North Dakota at that distance.
Other notable best times (to date) for Jaden include a 4:51 Mile and 10:20 2 mile.
Jaden lists the Milaca Mega Meet in Minnesota as his favorite race (where he placed in the top 20 at one of the nation's largest cross country races). His favorite running memory was being a member of the MHS cross country team that placed 3rd at the 2013 ND State Meet.
He credits his Mom (Carla) as having the greatest influence on his athletic career. "She has always encouraged me and has been one of my biggest supporters".
Mark your calendars for the opportunity to cheer for Jaden and his MHS teammates at the boys and girls State Cross Country meet in Minot at Souris Valley Golf Course on October 25th

Athletes of the Month- September 2014
"It runs in the family" is taken literally for the Austins of Minot. The five member family, comprised of Dad Neil; Mom Denise; Trever - age 12 (attending Jim Hill); Matthew- age 10 and Alex-age 8 (both attending Washington Elementary) have all developed a love for the sport of running.
All members of the family are accomplished at their individual levels in the sport:
Neil's Marathon P.R. is 3:26 at the 26.2 mile distance
Denise's Half Marathon P.R. is 1:50 at the 13.1 distance
Trever, Matthew and Alex have all won their age groups divisions in the
Subway Get Fit 5K Challenge in Bismarck
They took their involvement in the sport one step further this Summer by putting together a team in the four person relay race at the BurliMOT Half Marathon. They enjoyed the experience of running as a team so much that they are already looking forward to competing in it together again next year and trying to improve their time of 1:50:59.
We commend Neil and Denise for turning their participation in the sport of running into a family activity and for encouraging their three boys to enjoy the healthy activity together.

Always a runner, Heidi has competed in events from the 5k distance to Half Marathon posting the following personal best times to date:

Sara Medalen
Mile One Running Shop's
Athlete of the Month- July 2014
Sara is a New Rockford native who graduated from MSU and now teaches in the Minot Public Schools system; calling Minot home with her husband and three children.
Always active, she has enjoyed running in road races ranging in distances from 5k to the half marathon for many years. This spring she accomplished a longtime goal of running a full marathon at Duluth's Grandmas Marathon in June.
Completing a first marathon is a celebrated accomplishment for many runners, however, Sara's journey has been more emotional and poignant than most. She and her brother ran Grandmas together in honor of their sister (Betsy) who was the marathon runner in the family and unexpectedly passed away a few years ago due to a brain aneurism.
Sara counts finishing the 26.2 mile distance as her greatest sports thrill and credits Betsy as the person who has had the greatest influence on her athletic career.
Congratulations to Sara and all runners who participate in the sport while memories of lost loved ones resonate in each footstep.

MHS Girls Throws Team
Mile One Running Shop's
Athletes of the Month- June 2014
The Minot High School girls throws team made their presence known at every track and field meet they competed in this year. The five member team discussed their season prior to WDA: Else Nelson (the only senior) saw big personal bests and threw distances by mid-season which bettered her state efforts in 2013.
Allison Rabe, a junior, was encouraged to consistently improve at each meet in the shotput.
Malora Haagenson, a junior, will always remember the excitement of throwing her state qualifying toss in the discus at Minot's home meet. Jessica Drady , a junior, threw multiple personal bests in the discus and qualified for the state meet in both the discus and javelin.
MacKenzie Gleason, a junior, qualified for state in the shot put at Minot's home meet as well as in the discus.
The team rounded out their season with two second place finishes at WDA (Drady in the javelin and Gleason in the discus). But they weren't finished yet..... Drady was named the 2014 ND State discus champion and Gleason was awarded runner-up at the state meet.
Coach Disa Salander commented on the girls' successes by noting that they are a hard working group of multi-sport athletes. She also mentioned that only one will be graduating this year. Looks like 2015 could be another banner year for the Majette throwers!

Mile One Running Shop's
Athlete of the Month- April 2014
The 2014 Track and Field Team has the distinction of Minot State University's first All-American Athlete at NCAA DII level being awarded to pole vaulter Kirk Capdeville.
Kirk was MSU's only athlete to qualify for the indoor national meet and entered it ranked 14th overall. With a P.R. jump of 16' 4 3/4 " he placed 5th in the nation and set a new MSU school record to add to a previous school record he set during his freshman year in the heptathlon. Growing up in the small town of Hinsdale, Montana; the closest track for Kirk to practice on was 30 miles away. However, a lack of facilities did not deter him and he finished up his prep career by winning both individual and team state track titles in high school. Kirk appreciates the many people that have supported and influenced his athletic career throughout the years, including: his Father, Mr. "D", Gary Wageman, Dwight Freeman, Stu Melby and Doug Lebrun.
Best of luck to Kirk and all of the MSU track and field team members as they begin their outdoor seaon.
